Description

From a position of bewilderment and confusion we choose to act by producing and employing another tool from the land of the naive and outdated, represented by encyclopedic work, devoid of all logic and meaning considering current cultural conditions and speed. What the first edition Dubai graphic and visual encyclopedia presents is a reality that acts as a counterpoint to all the excess of attempts to decipher and understand Dubai. Attempts that are mostly unable to uncover items that shed light on the question ‘What’s it all about’?

Organizing scanning devices for the entire physical reality and processing information in much the same way as the early explorers did in order to reach unknown lands. The encyclopedia will be updated periodically so as to provide an authentic (temporal) guide and a database for Dubai and its times. With the suspicion that perhaps behind all this there’s a new grammar, we also need to develop new dictionaries.

Introducing the Dubai Graphic and Visual Encyclopedia as a tool that continues the work undertaken by Brusselssprout in identifying gaps in local contemporary art production in Dubai and its lack of documentation in many cases. In this issue, and we thus complete our Manifesto for Chapters on Dubai.

About Brussels Sprout

Brusselssprout is a luxury for those of us doing it and hopefully for those who consume it.

Art And Polemic In Pakistan by Virginia Whiles

Art And Polemic in Pakistan
Virginia Whiles
AED 330.00
ISBN 9781848853652

Description

Contemporary artists in Pakistan have, in recent decades, revived and reinvented miniature painting: a traditional artform which had faded under the colonial influence of the British, and is now gaining ground as a medium for a new generation of artists to challenge the world around them. At once traditional and post-modern, the miniature paintings reveal a satirical treatment of serious issues: from religious and political fundamentalism to "McDonalization," from violence against women to nuclear warfare, from the pressures of Purdah to the machismo of Lollywood film posters. This is the first in-depth look at this contemporary art movement which provides a fascinating insight into the links between art and politics, and between indigenous and global aesthetics. Forty miniature paintings are reproduced here in full color.

About the Author

Virginia Whiles is Associate Lecturer at Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts, London. She gained her PhD in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and Asian Studies, University of London.

Hossein Amirsadeghi
AED 392.00
ISBN 9780500977040

Description

A unique and comprehensive review of leading collectors, patrons and institutions related to the Arab World, Turkey & Iran

In the Middle East, arts patronage boasts a long and illustrious history. The artistic heritage of the royal and noble families of Persia, Egypt, Assyria, Mesopotamia and the Ottoman Empire is remarkable. No world museum of ancient art is complete without examples of Persian miniatures and carpets, Syrian metalwork, Egyptian lustreware, Mesopotamian figurines, Ottoman silks, Iznik pottery.

The splendid courts of Suleiman the Magnificent and Shah Abbas the Great are no longer, but collecting and patronage in the region today are enjoying a phenomenal rebirth. Aficionados are aware and knowledgeable – with astonishingly diverse collections: contemporary art to Orientalist painting, traditional Islamic miniatures to pottery and earthenware, maps and manuscripts to religious icons, often displayed in new, state-of-the-art museums, private or public, while new foundations further knowledge.

Art & Patronage: The Middle East is the first attempt to capture this rich vitality. Profiling 102 leading collectors, patrons, institutions and foundations, it offers an intimate glimpse of their collections, exploring the inspired motivation and passion that is shaping the new cultural landscape of the Middle East and preserving past glories for future generations.

Art & Patronage: The Middle East demonstrates that creative promotion – through foundations, museums, scholarship, corporate collections – is crucial for society’s cultural renewal.

About the Author

Born in Philadelphia, Steve McCurry studied history and cinematography at Pennsylvania State University before working as a freelance photographer in India. His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan, just before the Russian invasion, to take the first pictures of the conflict. Since then many of McCurry's images have become modern icons.

His coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including the Iran-Iraq war, Beirut and the Gulf War. His travels have also taken him to South-east Asia and the spiritual temples of Angkor Wat and Cambodia, made known to many through his memorable images for National Geographic magazine.

My Name is Charles Saatchi and I'm An Artoholic

My Name is Charles Saatchi and I'm an Artoholic
Charles Saatchi
AED 49
ISBN 9780714857473

Description

Art collector, gallery owner and founder of a global advertising agency, Charles Saatchi is famously publicity-shy, a reluctant interviewee who never attends his own gallery openings, let alone anyone else's. This book brings together his unflinching responses to more than 200 questions he has been set over the last few years by leading journalists and critics as well as members of the public. Whether the questions are about the art world, collecting, advertising, money or his personal life, Saatchi answers them all with disarming and sometimes brutal frankness, creating an enlightening and entertaining first-hand account of the most influential art collector of our time.

Questions include:

  • How do you decide whether something is worth £10 or £10 million?
  • So much contemporary art looks the same to me. Am I missing something?
  • Do you think you have messed up anybody’s life by flogging off all their work?
  • Is too much art now about shock value rather than creativity, like Tracey Emin’s unmade bed?
  • How can you tell a good Picasso from a bad Picasso? Come to that, how can you tell a good Damien Hirst from a bad Damien Hirst?

About the Author

Charles Saatchi founded the Saatchi & Saatchi advertising agency in 1970, which quickly grew to become the largest in the world. He started collecting art at about the same time and opened his first public gallery, a 30,000 sq ft ex-paint factory in Boundary Road, London in 1985. His new gallery occupying the 70,000 sq ft Duke of York HQ, Kings Road, London opened in October 2008.
