JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series almost single handedly brought fantasy novels into the mainstream while at the same time got kids (of all ages) reading and spawned a mega movie franchise.

Stephanie Meyer reinvigorated the dormant vampire genre (that has subsequently kicked into overdrive) with Twilight by making it a metaphor for teenage angst. The movie adaptations have also been a huge success.
