Building A Nation:40 Years Of The U.A.E In Pictures by Gulf News

Building a Nation:40 Years of the U.A.E in Pictures
Gulf News
AED 200
ISBN 9789948163282

Description

The United Arab Emirates is about to celebrate its 40th Anniversary on December 2, 2011, and Al Nisr Publishing is proud to publish Building a Nation to mark this very special event.

Building a Nation is a unique collection of more than 750 historic pictures which chronicle the story of the extraordinary development of the UAE, Many of these pictures have never been published in the UAE before, and months of research has gone into finding the pictures from sources all around the world.

The book is organized into five chapters telling story of the country from its very simple beginnings before the federation, then through its four decades right up to today’s modern state. It shows how the seven emirates which would make up the UAE started with very basic conditions, and then how economic development poured into the UAE, with roads, buildings, bridges and airports transforming the social environment in a very short space of time.

As Building a Nation recounts this story, it is important to remember that the federation might have failed without the clear leadership of the rulers, who tackled the problems they faced, and dealt with them. The modern state of the UAE is a monument to the dedication of the early leadership, as continued by their descendents to this day, and Building a Nation includes many images of the key meetings when these issues were discussed and resolved.

Looking around the UAE today, it is hard to grasp how far and how fast the UAE has moved in the 40 years since it was founded. It is very surprising to see the contrast between the basic simplicity of the early years and the sophistication of the modern UAE.

Building a Nation is designed to be both:

  • accessible enough for newcomers to the UAE to appreciate the story of the country, and also
  • informed enough for long term residents to value the information and historical context of events.

Building a Nation is 380 pages, printed to very high quality with each picture separately varnished, and covered in a hard binding with a dust jacket.

Description

The discovery of oil in the late 1960s catapulted the people of Abu Dhabi out of the isolating poverty into which it had plunged in the 1930s and onto the global stage. Massive construction projects built the city and infrastructural developments altered the physical and cultural landscape; in a few breathtaking decades, the lives of Emiratis were transformed by new opportunities and a social welfare system that offered free education, medical treatment, generous pensions, subsidies to families, and government incentives offered to citizens to participate in all sectors of the economy. Oil wealth also brought new expectations and new life-styles that are often sophisticated and lavish yet just as often criticized for being conspicuous displays of unbridled consumerism. Emirati Women offers a rare view into the lives of Emirati women and how they perceive the changes that have made poverty a dim and almost forgotten memory. In Emirati Women, Bristol-Rhys weaves together eight years of conversations and interviews with three generations of women, her observations of Emirati society in Abu Dhabi, the unflattering stereotypes commonly heard in the extensive expatriate communities, and discussions with her Emirati university students on topics ranging from marriage, independence, freedom, and the future.

About the Future

Jane Bristol-Rhys is a an Arabic-speaking cultural anthropologist who has lived in the Middle East for twenty years and has taught at Zayed University Abu Dhabi since 2001, having formerly taught in Egypt for many years. She is the author of many articles on the UAE.

The Art Of Falconry From Arabia Westward:Training and Conditioning Captive-Raised Falcons by Ken Riddle

The Art of Falconry from Arabia Westward:Training and Conditioning Captive-Raised Falcons
Ken Riddle

Description

With this book, author Ken Riddle has set a new standard in the literature of falconry. Its specific subject, as indicated in the title, makes it especially timely in the United States, federal regulations now providing falconers with access to 'chamber-raised' captive-bred falcons. Despite the apparently narrow specialization indicated by the title, however, the information offered in this volume is of inestimable value to anyone who flies, or aspires to fly, any bird of any species — wild taken or captive-bred — in our sport.

The knowledge the author shares with us here is the result of a unique set of circumstances, qualifying him as few others. Literally a master falconer long before he went to the Middle East, Ken has had the advantage of an unequalled opportunity to absorb the details of falconry as he encountered them in daily contact over more than a decade and a half within the inner circle of the falconers of Arabia. This work was originally commissioned by Riddle's Emirate patrons to help guide young Arab falconers who were both losing their hereditary mentors and were inexperienced in the ways of western falconry, especially regarding captive-bred falcons. That Riddle's expertise is such as to deserve this commission is in itself significant testimony to the esteem in which he is held in this exact ing falconry community. Ken here shares with us in explicit detail, and for the first time of which I am aware, invaluable techniques and insights unique to Arab falconry, practices based on experience and on a tradition uninterrupted since the very origins of the sport.

This reviewer has prematurely flown free more of his birds than he cares to recall, simply from frustration with tangled creances. Ken's introduction of the Arab gulss clearly dimin ishes the likelihood of profanity in my next use of that infernal string! And any of us who struggle installing a tail-mounted transmitter can profit from the previously unappreciated advantages to be found in his description of the Arabs' extensive stroking and physical touching of their falcons. Get some of your friends together and in a few sessions of tangese you will find why Riddle refers to that practice as 'bonding' rather than simply manning. At the same time you will learn one of the secrets that have caused all of us who have seen them to marvel at the tameness of the birds of Middle Eastern falconers. As if his expertise in western falconry and recounting what he has learned of traditional Arab practices were not invaluable lessons in their own right, Riddle describes for us the amalgam of both those practices, as now practiced by Emirati falconers, much of which has to be attributable to his own example.

When one then couples Riddle's unique and extensive falconry experience with the fact that he is a long-practicing, skilled and highly insightful veterinarian, his words take on substantial added import. For all that we may read of training in falconry texts from over the centuries, the subject of conditioning, although absolutely essential in successful fal conry, is rarely discussed in any depth. To our great advantage, Riddle devotes a great portion of this work to this subject, addressing it extensively and in explicit detail. That the author's approach to conditioning is based on his professional scientific insight into raptor physiology, not to mention from his repeated sessions in conditioning groups of thirty or more birds at a time, makes his words on that subject of the greatest value to any falconer who truly wishes to succeed in his art. In this connection, as often as we may read that one may ascertain the state of conditioning of a falcon by feeling its breast, such is commonly recommended in just a single sentence. Riddle's Subcutaneous Fat Index gives us our first real understanding of what to feel for, where to feel for it and, most importantly, what the results of such palpation represent. His discussion of conditioning alone qualifies this book as a future classic in the literature of our sport.

The world's falconry community indeed owes Dr. Kenton Riddle a profound measure of gratitude. His experiences shared here will have a major influence on all who read them. At the risk of repeating an old cliché, this book is a MUST, not just for every falconer's library but for every falconer's success in our sport.

Description

In the 1950s, with a population of a few thousand souls who scraped a living in a waterless desert by picking dates, diving for pearls, or sailing in wooden dhows to trade with Iran and India, Dubai was as poor as any village in Somalia or the Sudan.

Today freewheeling Dubai is everything the rest of the Arab world is not. It is capitalism on cocaine, Las Vegas without the gambling but twice the number of prostitutes. It is the fastest-growing city in the world, with an economy that outpaced China's last year while luring more tourists than all of India. It is one of the world's safest places, but it lies a stone's throw from its most dangerous. Shimmering skyscrapers hide gritty 24-hour construction at ground level. The city has become a metaphor for the lush life, where celebrities like Tiger Woods and George Clooney mingle in gilded splendour and where so many luxury cars fill the streets that crashes between two Porsches are not uncommon. Yet the city is also beset by a backwash of bad design, environmental degradation and labour practices that veer close to slavery.

This small Arab sheikhdom, one of seven semi-autonomous states within the United Arab Emirates, has become an icon of the future and a rising force in the Middle East, a news story that affects us all, Dubai tells its unique story.

Description

In the 1950s, Dubai's population of a few thousand scraped a living in a near waterless desert by picking dates, diving for pearls, or sailing in wooden dhows to trade with Iran and India. The town was as poor as any village in Somalia or the Sudan. Today freewheeling Dubai is everything the rest of the Arab world is not: capitalism on cocaine, Las Vegas without the gambling. Until last year, it was the fastest-growing city in the world, with shimmering skyscrapers hiding gritty 24-hour construction at ground level, and an economy whose growth outpaced China's while luring more tourists than all of India. It is one of the world's safest places, but it lies a stone's throw from some of its most dangerous. The city has become a metaphor for the lush life, where celebrities mingle in gilded splendor and where so many luxury cars fill the streets that crashes between Porsches are not uncommon. Yet it is also beset by a backwash of bad design, environmental degradation and controversial labour practices. This small Arab sheikhdom has become both an icon of the future and a rising power in the Middle East: "Dubai" tells its unique story.
